VAN SICKEL, Velda Marie

The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona 09/08/2003 Velda Marie (Roberts) Van Sickel, 97, of West Union, Iowa died Aug. 28, 2003 at The Friendship House in Eagar of Cancer. Velda was born Oct. 1, 1905 in Akron, Ohio the daughter of Louis and Lillian (Herwick) Roberts. She married Howard Van Sickel Dec. 23, 1924. After the birth of their second son they moved to Iowa where Howard began farming with his father. For Velda this meant leaving her family and friends plus all the amenities of the city to become a farmer's wife, this presented quite a challenge. Velda was preceded in death by her husband Howard; a son Donald and wife Gert; her parents; three brothers, Richard, Edwin, Reese and wife Viola; five sisters and their spouses, Estella and Floyd Owens, Hannah and Alan Walker, Martha and Harold Hamilton, Gladys and Jack Donnelly, and Gwen and Larry Thorton. A memorial service will be held Sept. 27 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in West Union, Iowa. Owens Mortuary of Show Low handled the arrangements.
