Norton Elwood Miller, Sr. was born in Strawberry, Ariz. on March 19, 1913. He passed away in Globe, Ariz. on March 4, 2010, two weeks before his 97th birthday. Elwood graduated from Arizona State College (Northern Arizona University) with a master’s degree in education in 1940. He lettered in track, cross country, and boxing while there.
He came to Globe to teach in 1935. In 1940, he married Alice Wilkie and they had one son, Norton. Elwood went on to become a school principal in 1946, and Superintendent of Schools for Globe from 1967 to 1976. Elwood served in the U.S. Navy as a navigator during World War II. He was an active member of the Lions Club, the American Legion, the V.F.W. and the Elks Club. He served as a treasurer for the Gila County Racing Commission for many years. The Gila County Race Track and the East Globe School’s library were both dedicated to him.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Alice. He is survived by his son Norton (Lynne), of Miami, Ariz.; his grandsons, Todd (Toni) of Oregon City, Ore., Scott (Moya) of Flagstaff, Ariz., Brian (Julia) of Globe, Ariz.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, March 12, 2010 at 1 p.m. at the LDS Relief Society room in Globe, Ariz. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 12 at 2 p.m. at the LDS Globe Stake Center. Interment services will be Saturday, March 13 at 11 a.m. at Strawberry Pine Cemetery in Pine, Ariz.
