CLAY DEAN (CARTER) POTTER
Clay Dean (Carter) Potter died in Prescott on Sept. 4, 2002, at the age of 94 years, 11 months. Clay was born Oct. 4, 1907, in Walnut Grove, Yavapai County, Arizona Territory, to James O. and Clara Ann (Pierce) Carter. Her grandparents, Thomas B and Elizabeth King Carter, arrived in Yavapai County from Jefferson County, Kan., in 1873 and William and Mary Bursey Pierce came from San Luis Obispo County, Calif., in 1886.
Clay attended grammar school in Walnut Grove and Tempe, then went on to graduate from Tempe Normal School (ASU). She taught school in Walnut Grave (s.p. - Grove) and Kirkland for many years.
With the exception of the years spent in school in Tempe, she spent all but the last five years of her life in the Walnut Grove-Kirkland Junction area. She was a member of the Arizona Cowbelles and the Kirkland Woman's Club.
She Was preceded in death by her husband, Eric T (Patsy) Potter, whom she married May 15, 1932, her parents, brother, Cortlandt Carter, and sisters Glenna Clark and Georgia Hampton.
She is survived by her son, P.C. Potter and his wife Pat of Prescott; grandchildren Joni Kirchner and her husband Tom of Prescott Valley, Cort Potter and his wife Christy of Payson, and Liz Ann Listol and her husband Randy of Prescott; great-grandchildren, Matt Reece of Phoenix and Michelle Reece of Prescott Valley, Amanda Lynn and Casey Potter of Indiana, Austin Potter of Payson, Joshua, Heather and Sierra Robb of Prescott and Zachary Listol of Prescott. She is also survived by nieces, Elizabeth James of Tempe and Helen Ewing of Santee, Calif.; and nephews Arden Carter of Walnut Grove, Richard Hampton of Australia and Darrel Miller of Kingman.
Private family services will be held at a later date at the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
