GOLDMAN, Robert


Robert Goldman, age 85, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family. Robert Goldman, formerly of Dayton, Ohio, established his home permanently in Phoenix in 1983. He was a prominent retail merchant in Dayton. He made his first buying trip to New York at the age of 18. He was Executive Vice President of the Beerman Store. He left Beerman's after many years to join his family in the Bargain Barn, one of the country's first discount operations. The Bargain Barn later became Goldman's. He also served his country in World War II in the United States Army/Air Corps. He received the "First Annual Humanitarian Service Award" bestowed upon him by the Resident Home Association for the Mentally Retarded of Dayton, Ohio. He was a lifetime Honorary Board member of the Resident Home Association for the Mentally Retarded of Dayton, Ohio. He was also asked to serve on the Board of Garden Park Enterprises, Inc., now known as Valley of the Sun. His expertise in fund-raising has benefitted many organizations. He was also an Honorary Director of Covenant House, the Jewish home for the aged in Dayton, Ohio. The Goldmans are members of Beth Jacob Congregation of Dayton, Ohio as well as Temple Beth Israel of Scottsdale, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents Jane and Harry Goldman, sisters Mae and Rita and brothers Mark and David. He is survived by his wife of 62 years Helen; sons Dr. Allan and wife Kathleen, Joel K. and wife Adriane, and Norman and wife Nancy of Laguna Niguel, CA; brothers Louis of Dayton, Ohio and Bernard and wife Marilyn of Boca Raton, Florida; 8 grandchildren and their spouses Scott (Kimberly), Gregg (Gail). Deborah (Matthew), Kevin (fiance Kara), Heath (Wendy), Brooke, Michael and Rachel; and 6 great-grandchildren Dustin and Reese Turney, Jack and Noah Goldman, Sydney Goldman and Marley Goldman. Services were held Thursday, November 21st at Sinai Mortuary Chapel, 4538 N. 16th Street in Phoenix with burial in Beth Israel Cemetery. Contributions in his memory are requested to Hospice of the Valley, 1510 E. Flower Street, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Published in the Arizona Republic on 11/21/2002.
