STEWART, Robert Reid

The Arizona Republic 3/7/2010 Robert Reid Stewart (1931-2010) touched thousands of lives as an English teacher (West High, Phoenix College), tennis coach, book reviewer and discussion leader. Upon retirement he continued as an educator for the Arizona Humanities Council and hosted a White Mountains community TV show, 'All Booked Up.' Born during the Depression, he enjoyed a deep connection to nature and the simple pleasures of family over material things. Brilliant and witty, he could run the board in Trivial Pursuit and was often referred to by family as "the walking dictionary." An avid hiker, he was undeterred by black bears or weather. Track team at Northwestern, Army tennis team and Senior Olympics medal winner, he raced up the Bryce Canyon Fairy Loop Trail at 70. The Show Low Public Library and dear friend Gayle (Changing Hands Bookstore) kept him well supplied with books, his life-long passion. Beloved husband (Nancy), adored father (Kathleen and Bridget), cherished big brother (Mike), and Grandpa Bob to Cooper and Ben. The family will always be grateful to Hospice of the Pines (Dewey) for their compassionate support. "A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops." H.B. Adams. Bob's students remain his enduring legacy.
