WHETTEN, Sgt. Glen (Jake)

Sgt. Glen "Jake'' Whetten, 31, who was killed in Afghanistan on March 12, was praised by one of his supervisors as "a consummate gentleman and soldier.'' Whetten was an Army Ranger who grew up in south Phoenix and was killed by an improvised explosive device. His mother and other family members live in Mesa. 

He is survived by his mother and an 11-year-old daughter who lives with her mother in Hawaii.
