MALONE, Nellie

(Maiden Name: Burnette)

The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona - 02/10/2004 Nellie Malone, 88, died Feb. 3, 2004 in Phoenix. Nellie was born to Albert and Nora Burnette April 18, 1915 in Cedar Creek. Nellie was married 50 plus years to Basil Malone, and they had four children, Elaine Ethelbah, Maxwell Malone, Lavon Armstrong and Lee Malone. Grandma also had 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. She also had the privilege of raising Loren Malone and Guy Massey. Nellie also had a god son, Floyd Massey. As a child, Nellie was raised in Cedar Creek, where she lived with her parents until she left to make her own home and to provide for a family. Soon after she married Basil, they moved to Show Low, where they lived for about 15 years. The family moved back to the reservation by the old sawmill in 1864. She finally made a permanent residence in Whiteriver, where she loved to grow her own apple and peach trees. Grandma enjoyed sewing patch quilts for people and she liked to go acorn picking as well as pinions. Grandma did bead work and wove burden baskets for fun and past time. She loved sunflowers and her favorite color was maroon. Later in life she lived to bring joy to her grandchildren. She loved her family as much as her faith in God. She was a very active member of the Miracle Churches, until her age kept her from attending. She also had the privilege of teaching Sunday School. She will be missed by anyone who knew her. Nellie will be put to rest at the White Mourning Dove Cemetery in Cedar Creek, next to her husband, who preceded her in death. Silver Creek Chapel Mortuary of Whiteriver handled arrangements.
