Sibyl Plumb, 82, of St. Johns died Feb. 9, 2004 in Springerville.
She was born Jan. 28, 1921 in St. Johns. She was raised in St. Johns and worked in various places, but spent most of her younger years babysitting nearly every kid in St. Johns. To mention a few, Yvonne and Evelyn Pulsipher, Darwin and Erma Grant's kids (in fact she named her daughter Rita Kay because of Rita Grant.) Then of course, helping Mom with her brothers and sisters. We thought she was our mama too, because she was always there for us.
She was a great movie fan. She knew the particulars about nearly every movie star a person would ever want to know about (of the older stars, that is). She loved to collect photos and took great pride in her crocheting. The best thing I remember about my sister is that she was full of laughter.
She met Delbert Plumb and they were married May 21, 1949, and had four children together. Three sons, Jerry Lynn, Dexter Riley (died in infancy) and Charles Berry (also died in infancy) and one daughter Rita Kay. They lived in St. Johns, Mesa, Phoenix, and Tucson at various times.
Sibyl is survived by her son Jerry Lynn (Pat, deceased); daughter Rita Nicewander of Mesa; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers, Quentin (Beulah) of Tucson, Bill (Bea, deceased) of St. Johns, Terry (Sally) of Taylor, Phillip (Gloria) of Lakeside, Douglas "Teed" (Ginger) of Show Low; sisters, Lorna (Jake, deceased) Scarbrough, (Bill) Anna Prentice, (Jimmy) Kay Leverton, all of St. Johns, Correnne (Elmer) Magee of Taylor, Colleen McCray of Heber, and Kathy (Neal) Riedhead of Nutrioso, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded her in death by her parents Dexter L. and Euphemia Berry McCray; husband Delbert; two sons Dexter R. and Charles B.; four brothers D. Lee of Snowflake, Kelly of St. Johns; Deaton of Show Low; and W.G. "Babe" of Snowflake.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Feb. 14 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, St. Johns Stake Center. Interment was at the Westside Cemetery.
Jewkes Mortuary of St. Johns handled the arrangements.
