The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona - 02/24/2004 Kitty Smith, 85, died Feb. 11, 2004 in Kingman. She was born Aug. 11, 1918 in Detroit, Mich. and married Fred Smith Feb. 29, 1944. They owned and operated the F Bar K store in Greer for over 35 years. The business opened as a small café in which Kitty served German cuisine. She became well known for the good food and low prices and soon employees from other cafes were eating in her little establishment. As Greer developed, the store evolved into a convenience store where camping and fishing supplies, bait and other short-term necessities for the local and summer visitors were available. Kitty's survivors include her husband, Fred, Greer; daughter Barbara Ann Leake, Tucson; son Bernie Choden, San Francisco; four grandchildren Whitney Leake Jr., Jack Leake, Carolyn Leake and Sgt. Jeffery Leake; and six great grandchildren, Sarah Honsberger, and Angela, Josef, Lisa, Mallory and April Leake. Funeral services were Saturday, Feb. 21 at 11 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Amity Chapel. Jewkes Mortuary, Springerville is in charge of arrangements.
