Joan Kathleen Sandoval, age 60, of Miami, Ariz., died on March 22, 2010. Joan was born on April 30, 1949 in Houston, Texas. Joan was raised in Houston, Texas by her parents, Harry and Mary Dodd, who preceded her in death.
Joan enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in January 1972 and she completed her basic training with the Woman Recruit Training Battalion Platoon 1-B at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot at Parris Island, S.C. on March 6, 1972. Joan served in the Marine Corps and received an honorable discharge in 1975.
Joan met and married John Shaw on June 18, 1977 at St. Polycarp Catholic Church in Stanton, Calif. Joan divorced John Shaw in 1981. Joan worked for Martin Marietta in Southern California for several years. Joan met Richard Sandoval and they were married in San Pedro, Calif. in May 1993.
Joan and Richard moved to Miami, Ariz. in 1995. Joan and Richard were divorced in December 1996. Joan remained in Miami, Ariz., since she loved the Globe-Miami area.
Joan loved to be a grandmother to all the children in the neighborhood and invited them into her house. Joan especially loved to play Legos and board games with her grandsons, Richie and Daniel. Joan loved her four cats, Sugar, Snowball, Sonic and Amy, who had free run of her house.
Joan had worked since February 1999 for the Department of Economic Security Division of Children Youth and Family Services. Joan loved her job and she enjoyed working with her co-workers. Joan was passionate about children and her concern for the welfare of children was foremost on her mind.
Joan is survived by her brother, Harry Dodd Jr.; her nephew, Beau Dodd; her brother, John Dodd and his wife, Victoria Dodd, and their four sons, Ken, Kris, Kevin and Korby; her daughter-in-law, Melanie Greene, and her grandchildren, Richie, Danny, Joey and Aliyah and Rick and Desiree Menjivar and her grandchildren, Megan and Emma.
A memorial service is planned for Saturday, April 3, 2010 at 10 a.m. at Living Waters Church, 125 E. Haskins Road in Globe, Ariz.
