The Arizona Republic 3/31/2010
Constance Fascia McCarthy, 77, of Glendale, Arizona died peacefully, with her family at her side, on March 25, 2010. Connie, as she was known to those who loved and knew her, was born on May 26, 1932 in Albany, NY. She was the daughter of the late Constantine and Carmina (Enzien) Fascia, and was preceded in death by her brother, Edwin Fascia. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, James; her sons David (Roxanne) and Brian (Karen); her daughters Lisa (Kevin Wicks) and Christina (Cecilia Ochoa); her grandchildren Christopher (Krystal), Cassaundra, Joel, Daniel (Sarah), Katherine, Miranda, Sean, Matthew, and Ethan; and her great-grandchildren Aidan and Liam.
She graduated from Mechanicville High School in 1949. Thereafter, she graduated from Syracuse University with her Bachelor of Science (Summa Cum Laude) and her Master's of Science (Magna Cum Laude). As a dedicated speech pathologist in education, she served her profession for almost 60 years. During that time she played significant roles in the beginning of two programs designed to meet the needs of at-risk students: the Oral Language Development Class (OLDC) and Search to Serve. Her dedication, compassion, and tenacity impacted the lives of many children and their families. Her service to these children came out of her desire to do what was in their best interest and a true sense of love and care. She also co-authored several books that were designed to meet the needs of at-risk students. She retired from the Washington School district after a long tenure in 1998. She remained licensed and maintained her CCC-SLP while continuing in private practice and mentoring others until her death. In her retirement years, she enjoyed attending concerts and shows with her husband and spending time with her family. Connie is dearly loved and respected by her family, friends, and colleagues. As a mother, she instilled a sense of independence, integrity, and passion. She knew how to bring out the best in each of her children and help them to grow into adulthood and parenthood. She will be immensely missed. Although she is no longer with us, her legacy will continue. A Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 PM, Friday, April 2 at Heritage Funeral Chapel, 6830 W. Thunderbird. She will be inurned at Phoenix Memorial Park.
