TIBBIT, Mayo Oscar


Ajo Coppers News 10/19/2005 Mayo Oscar Tibbitt, 78, died Monday, October 10, in Tucson. He was born August 25, 1927, in Manning, Louisiana, the son of Effie Day (Langton) & Ernest Mayo Tibbitt. He came to Ajo as a child in 1934 and lived here the rest of his life. On August 26, 1960, he married Betty Hobbs in a ceremony held in Las Vegas, Nevada. A locomotive engineer, he retired after a long career with Phelps Dodge. Mr. Tibbitt loved the desert and enjoyed camping, hunting, and just spending time in the outdoors. He was a member of the Arizona Desert Bighorn Sheep Society. A very quiet, gentle man, he loved spending time with his grandchildren and could always find something to keep busy. He is survived by his wife, Betty J. Tibbitt; by his sons and daughter-in-law, Greg & Donna Tibbitt of Oro Valley, Jeff Tibbitt of Maricopa, and David Tibbitt of Ajo; by his sister-in-law, Lonell Blow of Ajo; by his grandsons, Jvstin & Devin Tibbitt, and his granddaughter TaylorTibbitt; by his nieces, Ruth Woods of Tucson and Kimberly Hobbs of Medford, Oregon; and by his cousin Jeanette Nichols of Calgary, Canada. He is also survived by Thelma Jones of Tempe, a longtime friend he considered a mother-figure, and by close family friend Vivian Winthrop. Graveside services were led by Jerry Scott in the Ajo Cemetery on Wednesday, October 12. Pallbearers were Greg Tibbitt, Jeff Tibbitt, David Tibbitt, James McKay, Bob Bryant, and Bob Windom. Honorary pallbearers were Jack Steel and Herb Snodgrass. Arrangements were by Douglass Funeral Home.
