Fred Portillo, aka: the candyman, of Show Low, died April 11, 2004 at his grand niece home, Babetta Barcon in Apache Junction.
Mr. Portillo, a retired U.S. Navy Chief Petty Officer, was born in Miami Nov. 29, 1925 to Salvador and Luz Portillo. The Portillo family includes sisters, Beatrice, Lylia, Vera; brothers Salvador, Mike and Henry and David.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 16, at the outbreak of World War II. His brother also served in that war. He also served his country in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. His brother Henry lost his life in the Korean War.
An avid reader, prodigious storyteller and lover of nature and animals, he leaves behind his beloved dogs Sister, Whoopee, Ducky and Teppigan. In addition to his devoted care giver, Babette, he is survived by his sisters Beatrice Barcon of Miami, Vera Campos of Federal Way, Washington and brother David Portillo of Apache Junction.
Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces/nephews.
