Frank Dugger “Dug” Sheppard, 85
Dug Sheppard, 85 of Globe and Payson Arizona, passed away on April 1, 2010 after a valiant fight with cancer.
Dug was raised and educated in Globe. He retired from Magma Copper in 1986 and before that worked for Miami Copper, Copper Cities, Tennessee Copper and Pinto Valley as the warehouse foreman. He also owned and operated a small cattle ranch southwest of Globe, known as the Lazy SK, where he enjoyed many happy and arduous hours doing what he enjoyed the most, being a cowboy. As a rancher in Globe he has been a longtime member of the Gila County Cattle Growers Association.
During World War II, he joined the Navy in January 1944 and was in the submarine service until he returned home in 1946. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He always had many harrowing tales of submarine life during wartime. At the same time he had many wonderful memories of the camaraderie aboard the sub, and kept in touch through the years with all his old shipmates. He and his wife Jerry, attended several submarine reunions and their home was always open for any and all of them passing through Globe or Payson in later years.
Dug is survived by his wife of 63 years, Kathryn “Jerry” Sheppard; one son, F. William Sheppard of Phoenix; two grandsons, F. Jason Sheppard of Los Angeles Calif. and Kenneth M. Sheppard of San Francisco, Calif.; son-in-law, Range Shaw of Phoenix; sister and brother-in-law, Joy and Tom Geist of Long Island, N.Y.; former daughter-in-law, Bonnie Svoboda (Craig), of Phoenix; niece, Nancy (Jeff) Widman of East Meadow, Long Island; and nephew, Jeffrey Geist (Carol) of Longmont, Colo. Surviving are many, many cousins from all over the United States; and his life long friend, Bill Hughes of Globe.
He was a Past Master of White Mountain Masonic Lodge #3, F.&A.M., as well as a Past Patron of White Mountain Chapter #8, Order of the Eastern Star. He was a Past Rainbow Dad in the Globe Order of Rainbow for Girls and served on the advisory board of the local DeMolay Chapter. He was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a Past President of the Gila County Fair and Racing Commission and served on the Commission Board for many years.
Dug’s old-time stories, sense of humor and sincerity will be missed by all who knew him.
Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday April 8 at Messinger Payson Funeral Home at 302 W. Aero Drive in Payson, Ariz.
A Graveside service will be held at Mountain Breeze Cemetery in Globe-Miami at 2 p.m., also on April 8.
The family requests that memorial donations be made in Dug’s name to the Globe V.F.W. Post 1704 (707 Broad St., Globe, AZ. 85501).
