FRIEND, William (Firo)


Eastern Arizona Courier, Safford, AZ Wednesday, August 13, 2008 William "Firo" Friend of Safford died Aug. 7, 2008, in Tucson at the age of 73. He was born in Naco on Jan. 5, 1935, to Kabe Friend and Jacoba (Miranda) Friend. Firo worked for Phelps Dodge for 44-1/2 years, was an avid golfer with membership at Mount Graham Country Club, was hard working, dedicated, funny, loved to socialize and provided for his family. William was a volunteer at the food bank and a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, where he was a lector and commentator. On Nov. 24, 1956, in Bisbee, he married Felicitas Saldana, who survives him. Also surviving are his sons, Bill (Linda Maldonado) of Safford, Richard (Samantha) and David, both of Phoenix; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Nellie Durazo of Los Angeles. Preceding him in death were his parents, two brothers and two sisters. A memorial rosary will be offered at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, with a memorial Mass being celebrated at 10 a.m. at the church. Interment of his cremains will be in the Safford Union Cemetery. Contributions may be made in William's name to the Food Bank, 2100 N. Central, Safford, AZ 85546, or St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 311 S. Central, Safford, AZ 85546. Services are under the direction of Westlawn Chapel, Mortuary and Crematorium of Willcox.
