Pearl Vivian Falberg
Vivian was born in Minneapolis, Minn., on July 31, 1921, and passed away at her home on April 8, 2010.
When she was just a toddler, her family moved to Chicago, Ill., where she grew up. When Vivian was 6 years old, her father, Weaver, was killed in a tragic accident during a summer camping trip on the shores of Lake Michigan when a neighboring tent burst into flames and he rushed in to try to rescue the family trapped inside. He later died from his burns after driving himself to the nearest hospital. Vivi's mother, Emma Grace, worked many jobs to support her family, which included Vivi and her older brother Weaver.
Vivi played both violin and piano while growing up and always loved music. After graduation from high school, she worked as a stenographer. She joined the WAVES during World War II and after her training worked in a military post office. When the war ended, she moved to Menasha, Wis., with her WAVES roommate and worked in the paper manufacturing industry. During those years, she came down with poliomyelitis and was treated for many months in an iron lung and with the Sister Kenny method.
In the late 1940s, she and her roommate decided to move to sunny Los Angeles. They drove to California without air-conditioning via the famous two-lane Route 66. In L.A. she worked for the post office and later for Hughes Aircraft. When she retired, she moved to the Prescott Country Club in Dewey, Ariz., where she was active in the Property Owner's Association and was a longtime member of Faith Untied Community Church.
She is survived by her adopted nieces and nephews Jeanne and Smith Horton of Dewey and Carl and Marilyn Jersild of Neenah, Wis. she will also be remembered by her many friends here in Arizona and around the country.
Burial will be in Neenah, Wis., next to her WAVES roommate, Carole Jersild.
A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 22, 2010, at Faith United Community Church in Prescott Country Club.
