Senior Citizen Dies In Highway Traffic Accident
An elderly Wickenburg woman died of a broken neck Friday after a motorist sideswiped her car on West Wickenburg Way. Preliminary police reports indicate that Gertrude Conway Leasure, 87, was killed Friday morning while attempting a left-hand turn from Country Club Drive onto U. S. 60.
A westbound car slammed into the rear driver's side door of her 1988 Mercury Sable, spinning the vehicle away to its right. Leasure was pronounced dad at Wickenburg Community Hospital.
Her passenger, Valmer Zorn, received some facial scrapes but was not seriously injured.
The driver of the second vehicle, Lyn Del Monett, was a neighbor of Leasure's as both resided at a trailer park at 1855 W. Wickenburg Way; Monett in Space #39 and Del Monett in Space #5. Del Monett, 69, was not injured as she was wearing a seat belt and her air bag stopped her from hitting the windshield, police said. Del Monett drove a 1992 Chevrolet Corsica, police added.
Wickenburg Police Chief Doug Willmann said that Del Monett's car looked the worse for wear after the collision, but Leasure's sustained only the left body and frame damage.
Although Leasure and Zorn were wearing their seat belts, the impact in their case came from the side, throwing them to the left.
Willmann said it was still unknown whether the rain Friday morning contributed to the accident or not. Investigating office Tony Ruppel arrived on the crash scene shortly after the call went in at 9:42 a.m. Friday.
