ELZEY, Billy (Bill) Lee


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona - 09/10/2004 Memorial service for Billy "Bill" Lee Elzey, 69, will be held Saturday, Sept. 11, 2004 at 1 p.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 205 W. Lee St. with Bishop Tim DeWitt presiding. Bill was born Nov. 1, 1934 in Bentonville, Arkansas to parents, Lee and Bernice (Balch) Elzey. He died Sept. 5, 2004 in Phoenix. In 1942, at the age of eight, he and his family moved to Winslow. He graduated from Winslow High School in 1954 and went on to attend college at the University of Arizona. He worked for the Winslow Post Office and then for the Sante Fe Railway as a Brakeman/Conductor. He retired from the Santa Fe after 41 years of service. For 38 years he served as Assistant Legislative Director for United Transportation Union. He served as the Mayor of Winslow for three terms from 1986-1992. Bill was very active in the Navajo County Democratic Party serving as Head Chair for a total of 22 years; in addition to Head Chair, he was State Volunteer of the Year in 1993 and Outstanding County Chairman in the year 2000; Bill loved children. He served as President of the Winslow Little League baseball for 12 years; Head Chair of the State Little League Association; District Administrator for Arizona, District 1, Little League, for 35 years. Bill served on the Winslow Board of Education, Winslow Hospital Board for eight years, Winslow City Parks and Recreation Board. He was active, 50 year, member of the Elks Lodge No. 536, Blue Lodge, Shriners and the Masons. Bill was an avid golfer. He loved to travel with Bea to places in Mexico, Canada and Hawaii. He is survived by his wife, Bea Elzey; sons, Thomas Elzey and Michael (Denise) Elzey all of Flagstaff; grandson/son, Matthew Elzey of Winslow; daughters, Chantelle Haynes of Chicago, Illinois, Kathleen (Harry) Litosky of California; numerous grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lee and Bernice Elzey. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winslow Little League, P.O.
