A7 Louis Grijalva Ramirez, whose roots extended back to the late 1800's in the Wickenburg area, passed away Monday, Aug 21, in Congress. He was 91. Mr. Ramirez was born June 21, 1909 in Octave, and was a lifelong resident of Arizona. Through Louie's life that almost covered a whole generation, he had seen Wickenburg go from horse-drawn wagons on dirt streets to thriving community it is today. After losing his father at a very young age, Louie's life of hard work started in his youth, supporting his mother, younger brother and sister. Louie's quiet nature and honest hard work earned the respect of many in the community. He worked many various jobs in construction and on ranches for the Billingsleas and Moralezs doing everything from shearing sheep to shoeing horses, from supporting his sibling to supporting his children. Not only through his hard work, but also by skilled hunting, in which he was known for his sharp eye and great aim, thus earning him recognition in the military for his sharpshooting ability. He served in the military from 1942 to 1944. After the war Louie worked for Henry Coffinger for many years at the Wickenburg funeral home, where he probably dug many graves for our loved ones, never complaining of hard labor. He also found joy in playing guitar in a Mariachi band, and playing for several dances for the American legion, where he was a member for 55 years. He always loved taking his children picnicking in the desert and continued to do so all the way through his great-grandchildren. His love for the outdoors has been passed on through generations. And we can only hope that his dignity and honor will also be passed on to our children and our children’s children. A loving husband and father and grandfather, Louie will always be loved and missed by family and friends. His legacy will always live on through us. I love you, Grandpa! Mr. Ramirez is survived by his wife, Margaret Ramirez of Congress; brother Carlos Fimbres of California; daughters Nicolas Gaylord and Sylvia Stricker, both of Portland, Ore., Rose Stathis of California, Donna Ramirez of Wickenburg; second family Marilyn Jones of Covina, Calif., grandchildren Bobbi and Danny Sheperd and Claudine Sheldon, George and Richard Castro, Josh Smith, Brandi Guitterez, all of California, Mark and John Gaylord, Rebecca Bujema, Steven Stricker and Scott Stricker, all of Oregon, Kim Berry, Lori Monnett and Lisa Seagoe of Wickenburg; and several great-grandchildren.
