The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ October 11 2000, p. A16 Elmer P. Beckman, 82, of Wickenburg, passed away Oct. 6 in Peoria. Mr. Beckman was born Oct. 11, 1917 in St. Bernard, Ohio. Mr. Beckman was one of the first fully certified special education teachers, work study coordinators, and administrators in the state of Ohio. He retired in 1977 as Regional Director of the Special Education Regional Resource Center, serving Hamilton, Clermont, Betler and Warren counties. He was also a special education instructor at the University of Cincinnati, Ohio. Mr. Beckman was the recipient of many honors in his professional work, including the Adult Activity center in Cincinnati, named “the Elmer P. Beckman Center.” And culminated by the mayor’s proclamation of “Elmer P. Beckman Day” upon his retirement. Elmer also served his country in World War II as a member of the First Calvary Division. Mr. Beckman was the son of Joseph and Katherine Beckman. He was untied in marriage to Dorothy Wellington in 1942, until her death in 1980. He and Joy Tollefson were married in 1985. In retirement Elmer pursued his lifelong activity as a horseman. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, one sister and his first wife. Survivors include his wife, Joy; niece Lyn Mearns and husband Norman of Prescott, and niece Donna Lawrence of Florida; nephew Ned Hause of Tennessee; and step-children Sue Sherman of Minnesota, Jack Tollefson of Nebraska, Tim Tollefson of Minnesota and their families. All arrangements were by Frey Funeral Home and Cremation.
