John H. Newman, Jr., 80, or Eagar, died September 12, 2004, in Mesa following a coronary procedure.
John was born in Dewar, Oklahoma to John H. Newman Sr. and Elizabeth Myrtle Pate. The family then moved to Arvada, Colorado where he was raised. As a young man, John served in the US Navy during World War II as an Electronic Technician's Mate First Class aboard the USS Dixie (AD14) in the Pacific Theater of Operation. After the war, he completed his Electrical Engineering degree from the University of Colorado in Boulder.
He was a member of Home Lodge, F&AM, Ft. Wayne, Indiana and was a 32nd degree Mason. John was an electrical engineer working for several electronics companies across the nation. He specialized in electronic and anti-submarine warfare systems and worked as a marketing manager for several electronics companies. He retired in 1988 and move to the Springerville/Eagar area where he lived for the remainder of his life.
John served as a substitute teacher for the Springerville and Alpine School systems and helped in the Big Lake Visitor's Center for the Forest Service's Springerville District. He was an avid member of the White Mountain Model Railroaders and The Flagstaff Model Railroad Club. He also enjoyed fishing, Hawaiian music, and loved to travel. John was proceeded in death by his wife Gwendolyn Irene Newman (nee Haglund) of Washington Island, Wisconsin, his parents ad his sister Carmen Jurich.
He is survived by his daughter Kathryn (Ralph) LeFevre of Flagstaff; son Bruce (Anna) Newman of Long Branch, New Jersey; brother Norman Newman of Talihina, Oklahoma; granddaughter Kelly LeFevre; grandsons Brian, Jason, Andrew and Christopher Newman; and one great-grandchild, Krista Newman.
In his memory, the family will host an open house to celebrate John's life at a date yet to be determined. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Flagstaff Model Railroad Club or the American Heart Association in John's name.
