Elizabeth "Betty" Nuttall, 78, of Flagstaff, died April 23, 2010, in Fort Sumner, N.M.
She was born Aug. 21, 1931, in Newport News, Va., to Jimmy and Viola Williams. She spent her childhood in Virginia, where she was quite the roller skater. After high school, she studied nursing and earned her R.N. degree.
She moved to Flagstaff in 1967 with her husband, Johnny, and four children. She was a Brownie leader, teacher's aide and elementary school secretary. Her heart was touched by the sweet children and faculty of Christensen and Weitzel schools, and by the many friends and neighbors whom she felt so blessed.
She loved taking walks up at Buffalo Park, reading, playing Parcheesi and watching western movies. Her favorite professional sports were baseball and the Diamondbacks and basketball and the Suns.
She was a very loving and devoted mother. She far exceeded her role as grandmother, "Granny," to 11 grandchildren -- her "sweet dahlins" as she called them. She cherished every moment with them and, they, with her. She made endless trips with them to the Verde River. She loved watching and filming them play sports, and could actually make four games in one day and still have time for Peter Piper Pizza. In January of this year, she became a great-grandmother to a beautiful little girl.
She was her family's strength, their rock and she will be truly missed.
Betty Nuttall is survived by a sister, Dorothy Belle Williams of Flagstaff; a son, John M. Nuttall of Fort Sumner, N.M.; three daughters, Theresa Martin Johnson of Peoria and Julie A. Blanton and Nancy R. Bradley of Flagstaff; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a granddaughter and grandson.
A memorial service will be Saturday, May 8, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 224 S. Kendrick St.
