Ellen Gholson
Mrs. Ellen Gholson passed away at Phoenix Baptist Hospital on Thursday, August 8. An active Wickenburg resident for many years, she was born in Elmira, Kansas in 1882 and moved to Mesa, Arizona in 1929 from California. She and her husband, the late Bert O. Gholson, moved to Wickenburg in January of 1942 where they operated the Gholson Motel and Service Station until Mr. Gholson passed away in 1948.
Mrs. Gholson was active in the Presbyterian Church in Wickenburg and served as president of the ladies Aid. She was also on the Auxiliary Committee for the Arizona Children’s Home in Tucson and was awarded an Award of merit for her years of service.
Mrs. Gholson is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Jerles, music supervisor of the Wickenburg Elementary Schools until the time of her retirement in June 1973 and a sister, Mrs. Mary Nistl of Tulsa, Oklahoma. Other survivors include nephews and nieces in Kansas, Arizona, and California.
Funeral services were held last Monday at the Gibbons Mortuary in Mesa followed by interment in the Gholson family plot in the Mesa Cemetery.
A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church in Wickenburg following the morning worship on Sunday, August 18.
