MURPHY, Howard Dudley (Dud)


The Wickenburg Sun, Wickenburg, AZ Wednesday, May 5, 2010, pg A-12 Howard Dudley “Dud” Murphy of Glenview, Ill., and Wickenburg, Ariz., passed away Tuesday, April 20 in Glenview at the age of 97. Husband of 71 years to Dorothy (O’Connor), he is also survived by brother Richard, children Geoffrey Murphy (Karyn), Linda Becker (Randy), and Patricia Nahigian (Diran), as well as 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Born in Cato, N.Y., Dud lived in the greater Syracuse area until 1933 when he moved to Los Angeles to study accounting. After earning a degree from the University of Southern California in 1935, Dud returned to New York City for what would become a lifelong career with Price Waterhouse, where he became a partner in 1951. After his retirement in 1972, Dud kept busy serving on boards for the Salvation Army, Loyola University, and Skokie Valley Community Hospital. Dud and his family first vacationed in Wickenburg at Rancho de los Caballeros in 1960, where they built a home in 1972. He was a founder of the Los Caballeros Golf Club and volunteered countless hours at the Desert Caballeros Western Museum, where he received the Harry Needham Award. As a lover of horseback riding, Dud participated many years in the Desert Caballeros Ride, acting as trail leader in 1984. He also loved golfing, playing cards and other games, and traveling. Business and leisure trips took him to South America, Europe, Asia, and Cuba, as well as throughout the United States. Services will be private.
