She was born on the family farm at North Gage, New York July 5, 1913 to Earl and Harriet (Bullock) Jones. Tan graduated from the New York State teachers college in 1931 and taught fourth and fifth grade for the next 35 years. A master teacher, she mentored countless student teachers. She married Chester L. Hawley on Feb. 20, 1936, who precedes her in death Jan. 2, 1995 in Traverse City, Michigan. Tan was a devoted daughter, wife, mother and grandmother who will be remembered for her selfless devotion to others. Always thinking of others and never herself, she departs this world with an enormous store of love from all who were privileged to know her. She was a lifelong reader and passed her love of books on to her children and grandchildren. She loved anything that grew, especially spring wildflowers. Never without a feline companion, Tan comforted over the last several years by her faithful friend 'Little Lady'. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved grandson Jared Hawley in 1994, her husband Chet in 1995 and her sister Wilna Hale in 2002. Tan is survived by her children, Bob and Joan of Glen Arbor, and Dick and Mary Ellen of Newport News, Virginia; her sisters Majorie Puckett and Ardith Thompson. Also surviving are her five grandchildren, Lisa Siddall (Sam) of Empire, Darren Hawley (Meghan) of Cedar, Robert Hawley (Jennifer) of Traverse City, Chris Hawley of Atlanta, Georgia and Rich Hawley of Newport News, Virginia. She also leaves behind eight great-grandchildren and 12 special nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate Francis' life will be held in Walton, New York, where she will be interred in the family plot sometime in the spring. Expressions of sympathy may be directed to her two favorite charities, Boys and Girls Town USA or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
