A Celebration of the Life of Dr. Delbert L. Boyd, Ph.D., ACSW, LISAC, who died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at his home in Tucson following a long illness, will be held in mid-February.
Dr. Boyd moved to Holbrook in 1989 from Champaign, Ill., and served as clinical director at Community Counseling Centers Inc. in Holbrook until his retirement in 1998. He was active in many community activities, including the Holbrook Painted Desert Kiwanis Club, the Holbrook Alliance Against Drugs and the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, Judy, worked on the downtown Living West Park, and donated a pine tree.
After relocating to Tucson, he worked as a Certified Substance Abuse Counselor at Cactus Counseling Associates, and was licensed July 1, 2004. He provided various clinical services, staff supervision and program development.
He was a charter member of the Arizona Association of Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors (AzAADAC) in 1992. He enthusiastically participated in all areas of his profession, and was recognized as Counselor of the Year at the AzAADAC State Conference in 1997. He was honored by his peers with the Life Achievement Award in 2002.
He lived Serenity, and had a passion and personal commitment for helping others. His positive attitude and dry sense of humor were enjoyed by his peers and clients. He loved a good joke. He modeled professional ethics, integrity, excellence and humility. An avid bowler, he bowled on the Monday Night MenĂs League, and enjoyed weekend bowling and various fund-raising tournaments.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Boyd of Tucson; his brother, Richard Boyd of Tucson; and three sons, one daughter, two stepdaughters, one brother, two sisters, 10 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, all of the Midwest.
The hospice team at Odyssey Healthcare provided skillful medical attention, tender care and support for him and his family during the past six months.
