Harriett DeView, a retired teacher and Sun City resident, - died December 11, 2003. Harriett Spears Dean was born at Ashton, Michigan February 17, 1915 to Myrtle Spears Dean and Harry van Ess Dean. She graduated from Flint County Normal in the 1930s and taught until her marriage in 1936. She resumed teaching in the 1960s after studies at Montieth College, Wayne State University, earning a bachelor's degree, then a master's degree in education from University of Michigan. She spent summers pursuing continuing education courses which took her to Europe and Africa. Her favorite stints were at the University of Dar es Salaam. Harriett was active in the Civil Rights Movement and advocated political action throughout her life. Harriett DeView was an excellent musician, continuing her musical education well into mid-life. Mrs. DeView retired from teaching in the early 1980s, moving to Arizona where she was active as a Scottish country dancer. She was a Humanist and member of the Universalist Unitarian Church. Harriett married James C. Moran in the 1930s and Harden DeView in the 1960s, both preceding her in death. She is mourned by her daughters Ann Campbell, Patricia Cook, and Kathleen Linn (Burghard). Son Robert C. Moran (Vicki) died this year. Harriett will be sadly missed by her beloved grandchildren, Jennifer Cook (Tom), Ronald Cook (Susan), Damian Linn, Marisa Linn(Jason), Jesse Moran, Molly Campbell (Fred), Joseph Campbell (Janet), Ward Marquette (Heather). Granddaughter Vanessa Campbell preceded Harriett in death. Mrs. DeView leaves adoring great-granchildren, saddened brother, sisters, sister-in-laws, loving nieces, nephews, cousins and valued friends. A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 21 at 12:30 p.m. at the Universalist Unitarian Church, 5904 Cholla St., Glendale.
