O'Steen Sr., Bernard Van
Bernard Van O'Steen, SR., a U.S. Army veteran, passed away December 17, 2003 at age 89 in the home of his son in Apache Junction. Barney had a second career with Salt River Project, during which time he worked tirelessly with various groups committed to the employment of handicapped people. He was a long-time member of Central Baptist Church, Phoenix, and later, First Southern Baptist Church of Scottsdale. Barney was a regular volunteer at organizations which provide assistance to the poor and disabled. Survivors include his son Van and daughter-in-law Debbie, his son John, M.D, his daughter Jeannie and son-in-law Bruce Pratt, his caregiver and friend, Gary Norris, and three grandchildren, Jonathan and Laura O'Steen and Jennifer Pratt. He also is survived by three sisters, Ann Hanley, Marge Henry and Sue Stone. Services will be held at Green Acres Mortuary, 401 N. Hayden Road, Scottsdale at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 20, 2003. The family suggests contributions to Rio Vista Center (for the needy and homeless), 1431 E. Southern, Phoenix 85040.
