Roger “Don” Edwards, passed away on April 14, 2010 at the Hospice House of Spokane after a lengthy battle with prostate cancer.
Don was born on Sept. 10, 1935 in Vernon, Texas to Bradley E. Edwards and Frances (Hayhurst) Edwards. He lived in Texas until the summer of 1942, when his family moved to Miami, Ariz. While in high school he met the love of his life Judith “Judy” Henderson and they were married in December 1955. They celebrated 54 years of marriage on Dec. 26, 2009.
Don enlisted in the Air Force in November 1954. During his 30 year career in recruiting and survival he was assigned to Davis Monthan AFB AZ, Stead AFB NV, Mesa, Ariz., Clark AFB in the Philippine Islands, Fairchild AFB WA and Homestead AFB FL. He retired as a Senior Master Sergeant in November 1984 in Spokane, Wash.
After his military career he attended Spokane Community College completing Small Gas Marine Engine and Aircraft Maintenance. He got his FAA A&P Rating and went to work for Spokane Airways in June 1989 as an aircraft mechanic. Don bought a Cessna 172 which he refurbished and flew from 1988-1996. He retired completely in 1997 and started traveling and enjoying visits with friends and family.
He was an avid hunter and enjoyed camping and salmon fishing long the Washington coast near Seiku. He was active in the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, Barons Model Club and the Post Falls Flyers.
His son Ralph was his best flying pal and they flew radio controlled airplanes together as much as possible. He enjoyed life to the fullest and will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Don is survived by daughter, Helen Edwards of San Antonio; sons, Roger Edwards of Yuba City, Calif. and Ralph Edwards of Spokane; sisters, Joyce Robertson of Opelousa, La. and Sandra Bechler of Casa Grande, Ariz.; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents Bradley and Frances Edwards, wife Judith, (Jan. 10, 2010) and daughter, Donna M.
At Don’s request there will not be any services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to hospice of Spokane or a Cancer Charity.
