Richard LaVern Knox

Richard LaVern Knox, also known as “Sarge” passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010 at his home in Snowflake, AZ. Richard was born April 11, 1950 in Benton Harbor, Michigan, grew up in Miami, Florida, then moved to Arizona and traveled worldwide. He was a Journeyman Electrician, loved gold prospecting, camping, fishing and meteor hunting. Richard was a member of the Gold Prospectors Association and volunteered and taught prospecting to many children and organizations.
He enjoyed Beach Boys music, Mickey Mouse cartoons and Chevy cars. Richard also spent a lot of time helping out at the Shepherd’s Kitchen in Snowflake. Richard also served his country as a Marine from 1968-1972 in Vietnam in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 4th Marine, 3rd Marine Division, was honorably discharged, and awarded the Purple Heart.
Richard is survived by his wife of 18 years, Martha La Dean Knox of Snowflake; sons Alvin Carter (Tara Lupin) of Norfolk, VA, Joseph Wilke of Kisimee, FL, Mark Carter (Billie King) of Mesa, AZ; daughters Marie Silvers (Jay Silvers) of Mesa, AZ, Martha Wilke of Scottsdale, AZ, Ruth Carter of Norfolk, VA and Cheryl Dupree of Manistee, MI. He is also survived by his grandchildren Summer, Katie and Megan Silvers; brothers Thomas Layton Knox and Leslie “Nomad” David Knox, both of Manistee, MI; sister Erla Perry of Manistee, MI and nephew Michael Mourer of Manistee, MI.
Richard was preceded in death by grandparents Layton Davis and Lena Pickard, parents Taylor Marshall and Charlotte “Kelly” Lorretta Davis Knox and by brother Taylor Marshall Knox.
Funeral Services will be held in his honor, on Wednesday, May 26th at 2:00 PM at Silver Creek Mortuary, 745 Paper Mill Rd. Taylor, AZ 85939. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Shepherd’s Kitchen: P.O. Box 1364, Snowflake, AZ 85937.
