SWEENEY, John Miller (Rev.)


Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, Arizona, Published Wednesday, May 26, 2010. Rev. John Miller Sweeney, 65, of Lake Havasu City, passed quietly into the presence of the Lord early in the morning of May 17, 2010. Born Nov. 14, 1944 in St. Louis, Mo., to Jim and Fran (Brient) Sweeney, John was raised in New Mexico and Texas. He was called to the ministry at 8 years of age and lived his life in humble obedience to God. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees in religion at Pasadena College, his M.Div. degree at Nazarene Theological Seminary, and his Ph.D. in Practical Theology at California Graduate School of Theology. He was ordained as a minister in the Church of the Nazarene in 1972. His career included interning in Honolulu, Hawaii, and pastoring in Craig, Colo., San Diego, Calif., Idaho Falls, Idaho, and Lake Havasu City. Rev. Sweeney has pastored the Lake Havasu Church of the Nazarene for the last 17 years. Most recently, he preached for the community at the local Easter Sunrise Service. One of his great passions was traveling to other countries to help build churches and share the gospel, especially in the countries of East Africa. His contributions in Africa also include teaching African church leaders at the 2004 and 2006 Holiness conferences at Africa Nazarene University in Nairobi, Kenya. John is survived by his wife, Beth (McClaflin) Sweeney; his son, James Sweeney; his daughter and son-in-law, Denise and Job Nelson; and his daughter, Julie Sweeney. He is also survived by his brothers, Paul and Fred Sweeney; and his sister, Jan Sweeney. Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. Friday at the Lake Havasu Church of the Nazarene with Dr. Byron Schortinghouse officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be Thursday evening from 6–8 p.m. at Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home.
