COX, Melvin Gene, Jr.


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona - 04/08/2005 Melvin Gene Cox, Jr., formerly of Lakeside died March 9, 2005 in Union County, Tennessee. As a young man, Melvin Jr. spent many hours in the log woods with his father and grandfather. He loved to fish, and would do so in any weather or circumstances. He loved sports. In 1969, Melvin hit 18 home runs in the Heber-Overgaard Little League Organization. In 1970, he was the first and only baseball player to hit home runs in the Pinetop-Lakeside inaugural season. Melvin graduated from Blue Ridge High School in 1973, completing his Blue Ridge career in only three years and was attending college at age 16. As a high school freshman, he was a letterman in four sports. He was also a member of the National Honor Society. Melvin was a Bible scholar, graduating from a Bible College in Colorado. His career choice was in computer programming and engineering. He traveled the world setting up large industrial bakeries. His love of children led him to become President of the Union County Little League and a coach for the Jr. Pro Basketball Organization. Melvin was truly a unique individual who shared his love and talents with us. He was loved and respected by many, and will be great missed. His ashes will be returned to his beloved fishing spots in Arizona. He is survived by his parents Melvin and Lucille Cox of Maynardville; children Ami Shull of Knoxville, Melanie (Jimmy) Staley of Corryton, Patrick Cox of Knoxville and Maxwell Cox of Maynardville; grandchildren Autumn and Rieli Staley of Corryton; beloved former wife Dr. Patricia Cox of Knoxville; along with her family, Thurman and Twila Blackwell of Alexandria, Louisiana; his significant friend Jerry Williams, and her family Daniel Williams, Rebecca Roach, Jenny Widener and grandson Bailey, Jim and Virginia Cox, all of Maryville. In lieu of flowers the family would request donations be made to the following: Knoxville Rescue Ministries, the Heart Association of Knoxville and/or the American Diabetic Association
