James Travis Montgomery, 73, passed away March 17, 2010 in Lake Havasu City. He was born on May 14, 1936, in Oceala, Ark., to Ansel and Mildred Montgomery.
Travis, as he was known to his family and friends, spent his school years in Pascagoula, Miss. He played football for his high school, the Pascagoula Panthers No. 57. He then went on to play for the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss). He moved to Phoenix in 1955, where he worked for Bayless Supermarket and American Oil and then proceeded to be self-employed, owning a couple cocktail lounges. Travis moved from Phoenix to Lake Havasu City in the 1970s and opened up the Golden Horseshoe Steak House, owning it from 1976-1997. He loved spending time on the lake fishing. Travis made many friends along the way and he will be deeply missed by all. “He did it his way.”
Travis is survived by his three children, Thomas (Mary Ann), of Lake Havasu City, Lori (Adam) Mason, of Tucson, and Misty (Justin) Stearns, of Prosser, Wash.; 11 grandchildren, Nicolle, Dakota, Alisha, Mary Jane, Keith, Jon, Theresa, Lizzy, Brandon, Cory and Taylor.
