GIBBS, Jerrold A. (Tom)


Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, Arizona Published Saturday, June 5, 2010 Jerrold A. (Tom) Gibbs 86, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his daughter and son-in-law’s home in Yuma May 22, 2010 surrounded by his loved ones. Tom was born April 14, 1924, in Ames, Iowa. Tom graduated from high school in Toledo Iowa. After graduation Tom enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps in 1942. He participated in the Ploesti raid, and was credited for 300 flying hours in his B24 Liberator. Tom was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal with two Oak Leave Clusters, and the Purple Heart. After the war Tom moved to Iowa and raised his family. He moved to Lake Havasu City with his family in 1966, where he owned and was involved in several businesses. He was a director of the State Bank and his pride and joy’s was Cactus Realty where he worked as a broker. Tom was an avid golfer and enjoyed being a member of several organizations including Masonic Lodge, Shriners, VFW, Elk Lodge and the American Legion in Iowa and Arizona. Tom retired and moved to Yuma in 1990 to be near his daughter. Tom was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; he will be missed by all his friends and family. Tom is preceded in death by his sister, Shirley Rowe and his mother, Ivadel Scarborough. Tom is survived by Marjorie Gibbs, of Prescott; daughters, Janet (Larry) Mommer, of Yuma, Laura (Scott) Simpson, of Prescott; sons, Jerry ( Betty) Gibbs, Lyle (Pam) Gibbs, both of Prescott, Greg (Lisa) Gibbs of Flagstaff; 12 grandchildren and 12 great- grandchildren. There will be a celebration of life and memorial service with honors at the American Legion Post 19 on June 12.
