The Daily Courier, Prescott, Arizona Tuesday, July 10, 2007 Oma Nettie Travis - Oma passed away in Prescott, Ariz., on July 5, 2007. She was born to Henry Oscar and Mary Emma Johnson on April 7, 1921, in Brockman, N.M. Oma was 86 years old. When Oma was four years old, the family moved to Duncan, Ariz., and ran the Johnson Hotel. In 1937, the family moved to Prescott and Oma graduated from Prescott High School in 1939. She worked for the phone company in Prescott for several years when when switchboard operators place the calls by asking ‘number please.’ On February 23, 1946, she married William (Bill) Travis. She became a homemaker and raised five children. When all the children were grown, Oma accompanied Bill on his job shuttling vehicles for local car agencies. Bill and Oma could always be found together, and even after 61 years of marriage, still held hands when they walked together. Oma was a fantastic pianist and could play almost any piece by ear as well as read music. She loved to play and never met a piano she didn’t like. Her music brought happiness to many people’s lives, and will be greatly missed. Oma is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Kathryn (Ken) Cook, Janet, William (Valerie), Betty (Glen (Dickens and Robert (Diane); and by three granddaughters; one grandson; and one great-grandson. She is also survived by her sister, Martha Shipley; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sisters, Peggy Mackin and Frances Turkovich. A Celebration of Life reception will start at noon followed by a Memorial Mass at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prescott. The Arizona Ruffner Wakelin Funeral Home assisted the family with arrangements. Information provided by survivors.
