Annelies Barefield, born Sept. 8, 1931, died Jan. 6, 2010 at the age of 78 of natural causes.
Annelies was born in Hong Kong, China, to Heinrich Huto Waser and Josephine Ott. She had two older brothers, Henry and Felix, but she was daddy’s little girl. When she was 9 years old, her father passed away. After his passing, she attended boarding school in Johannesburg, South Africa, which she enjoyed a great deal. While in school, she was a champion swimmer and tennis player. At the age of 20, she married Ken Caglem, an MP in the army. Ken and Annelies were stationed in Europe and had their first child, Barbara Ann Zurich in Switzerland in 1951 and their second child, Lindy Sue in Regensburg, Germany, in 1952.
In 1953, Annelies moved to Summit, Ark., with her family and received her United States citizenship. She had a third child, David Lee, who passed away shortly after his birth. In 1958, she had a son, Kenny Lee. She worked various jobs while in Arkansas and later the family moved to Southern California to be closer to family. Not long after, she divorced Ken and worked in downtown Los Angles in a department store while raising her three kids on her own.
In 1962, she met and married William (Bill) Barefield, a carpenter, which allowed her to be a stay-at-home mom. Later, she and Bill divorced and Ann moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho. Ann enjoyed gardening and her black lab named Slick. In 1989, she moved to Lake Havasu City and immediately settled in with the locals. She worked briefly at Taco Bell but then decided to focus her time on volunteering for the local thrift store. She became close to all her neighbors and would always greet them with a smile. Ann was ordained as a Deaconess on July 2, 2006, at her local church.
Annelies had many interests and enjoyed living life to the fullest. She was a great swimmer, enjoyed catching King Salmon in Alaska, and playing table tennis with anyone that dared to challenge her! She traveled throughout most of her childhood, allowing her to learn and speak several different languages and she always looked forward to meeting new people.
Her passing will leave a void in everyone’s life that had the privilege to know her, but it also gives us great comfort knowing she is with the Lord.
She was preceded in death by her father, Heinrich Huto Waser; mother, Josephine Ott; sons, David Lee and Kenny Lee; and brother, Henry Waser.
She is survived by her brother, Felix Waser and wife Lini Waser, of California; daughter, Barbara Harding and son-in-law Raymond Harding, of Alaska; daughter, Lindy Burkes and son-in-law Jody Burkes, of Wyoming; grandson, Scott Harding, of Alaska; granddaughters, Crystal Black and husband Bob Black, of Maryland, Erica Malstrom and husband Troy Malstrom, of Alaska, Valerie Adams and husband Mike Adams, of Wyoming, and Raynae Harding, of Alaska; great-grandchildren; Samantha and Bain Black, of Maryland, Abby and Chase Malstrom, of Alaska, and Ethan Harding, of Alaska; nephew; Victor Waser and wife Jane, of California; and niece, Lisette Waser, of Maryland; and many beloved friends.
