Paul Henry Hugo Fromholtz, 91, died Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2007, at his home in Prescott. He was born on Jan. 28, 1916, in Weehawken, N.J., but spent most of his formative years in Hoboken, N.J., and worked for that area's electrical utilities company.
At the onset of World War II, Paul was drafted into the United States Army Air Corps, serving primarily in the Pacific Theater throughout the duration. Following the war, he remained in the Reserves, only to be recalled at the beginning of the Korean War. When that conflict concluded he elected to make a career of the Air Force, going on to serve the United States in Vietnam.
He met his wife Amy (deceased 1993) during WWII as the two moved in opposite directions through Australia; he toward the front and she away from it. They were married some years later when, following a long-distance relationship, he was stationed to her home country of England. They had one son, Paul Charles, who now lives in Prescott Valley
In 1973, following retirement from the Air Force as a CMSgt. and with no particular destination other than "the Southwest" in mind, Paul packed a U- Haul and moved the family from upstate New York to Prescott. He lived in the same home for 34 years - fully independent until his death.
His retirement from the Air Force and move to Prescott were prompted by his desire to assure that his son was able to attend all four years of high school in one location, his love of the outdoors, and fact that "you don't have to shovel sunshine."
During his "retirement," Paul worked several jobs in: the Prescott area, primarily in the security field. As the years advanced, he donated much of his time to such organizations as the Prescott United Methodist Church, Prescott: People Who Care and the Arizona Pioneers' Home. In his early 80s, of his volunteer job chauffeuring those who needed such assistance, Paul once told his son: "Ya gotta help these old people out."
Throughout his life, through great inner strength, Paul staunchly maintained his independence. Concurrently, he blessed all who knew him with his sense of humor, kindness and wisdom. He will be missed.
Paul is survived by his son, Paul Charles, of Prescott Valley; his sister Henrietta Siodlowski of Oldwick, N.J.; and his dear friend. Margene Fellows, of Prescott.
A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 17, at the Prescott United Methodist Church, 505 W. Gurley St.
Contributions in Paul's memory may be made to the Yavapai Regional Hospital Hospice Program or to Prescott People Who Care.
