Born in Dusseldorf, Germany, Hilde immigrated to the United States, arriving on Thanksgiving Day, 1938. She lived for a while in New York City where she met and married William B. Irell on June 14, 1941. She lived many years in Vineland, N.J. where she raised her family and moved to Ocean City, N.J. after her children were grown.
After she was widowed on Sept. 6, 1977, she relocated to Arizona in 1981.
That same year she met and married her second husband, Henry Greenberg. She lived in Scottsdale and Prescott, Ariz., for 25 years, moving to Tucson in 2004.
She worked as a secretary and book keeper as a young woman and volunteered in her senior years in museums and theaters in Scottsdale and Prescott and at the Reid Park Zoo in Tucson.
She always loved reading and education; attended Rutgers University and earned a degree from Edison College. She enjoyed theater, painting, tennis and especially dancing. Besides ballroom dancing, she joined square dance, tap dance and Senior performance dance groups. She was a passionate traveler, and at age 90, took a trip of
a lifetime with an African safari to Kenya and Tanzania.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Adolf and Berta (Schallenberg) Stuehler; her brother Manfred Stuehler; her first and second husbands, William B. Irell and Henry Greenberg; and her daughter-in-law, Georgiana (Missy) Irell.
She is survived by her children, Madeleine Irell and Richard B. Irell, his wife, Christa; her grandchildren, Benjamin Joseph, Rebecca Jean and Zachary David Irell; and her cousin Irma Greenbaum.
Burial will be in Alliance Cemetery under the direction of Rone Funeral Home in Vineland, New Jersey. Arrangements by Bring's Broadway Chapel, 6910 E. Broadway in Tucson, Ariz.
