The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 09/09/2005 Barbara "Bobbie" Benson Overby Mrs. Barbara "Bobbie" Overby died Sept. 2, 2005. Bobbie was born Jan. 9, 1926 in Keams Canyon on the Hopi Reservation. She was the daughter of Emil and Gayl Benson. She graduated from Wasatch Academy and the University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in education. Bobbie married George S. Overby Aug. 7, 1946. They recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Bobbie was active in several volunteer groups including, but not limited to, Habitat for Humanity, in which, along with George, they built houses locally, with former President Jimmy Carter in Mexico and South Africa. Bobbie served the Tempe community with Meals on Wheels, in Hospice services and Literacy groups. George and Bobbie received the Don Carlos Humanitarian Award from the city of Tempe, honoring them as volunteers of the year. Bobbie was an active member of University Presbyterian Church in Tempe for 36 years, active in worship, mission and Taize. She is survived by her husband George S. Overby; brother, Elbert "Skip" Benson of San Francisco, Calif.; daughter, Jo Lewis of Milwaukee, Wis.; son, Chris Overby of New York; granddaughter, Meredith Robbins; and great-granddaughter, Sidney Robbins of Gilbert. Bobbie's sister Verna Mae Wilson of Muscatine, Iowa preceded her in death two years ago. Memorial services were held at University Presbyterian Church, Tempe Thursday, Sept. 8, 2005 at 7 PM. The family requests in lieu of flowers donations may be made to the American Red Cross for the survivors of the hurricane.
