On Thursday, April 15, 2010, Joseph (Joe) Robert Chancerelle, a resident of Dewey and Prescott, Ariz., passed away at UPH Hospital in Tucson after complications from abdominal surgery. He will be remembered for his love of the outdoors, his spirit of adventure, his good heart, his concern for the well-being of others, and for the love he left behind for his family.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patricia Lobel Chancerelle; his son Mark Chancerelle of Dewey, Ariz.; daughter Julie Ziemelis and her husband Eric; his granddaughter and grandson of Los Gatos, Calif.; his sister Jean Holler of Ohio; his stepdaughters Jana Lisa Lobel and Carrie Lauranne Goelitz; his step-granddaughter Sarah Goelitz; and step-grandson David Goelitz in Arizona.
Joe was born on Jan. 2, 1932, in the town of Taftville, Conn., to Joseph Theophile and Mary Augusta Chancerelle. He graduated from Norwich Free Academy, attended the University of Connecticut and received a BA in marketing. Joe served as a member of the Air National Guard during the Korean War and received his master's in education from the University of Hartford, and subsequently taught elementary school in Reno, Nev., after a stint as principal of a business college there. Joe lived and taught in Reno until he met Pat in 1978 when Pat was showing her prized Basenjis at a dog show. They married in 1979 in Reno, Nev. Together they realized their dream of owning open land and designing and creating their own environmentally friendly house in the hills of Dewey, Ariz. They worked together to create a safe environment for many chemically sensitive adults at their Ecology Ranch, and worked tirelessly on educating people about environmental health hazards.
While living in Dewey, Joe was an active participant on the city incorporation and planning committees and was a staunch supporter of air quality issues in the region. Recently, Joe served on the Prescott Vision 2050 Transportation Study Group and was an active participant in Stand Up Prescott and various planning groups until his health problems escalated.
Joe's family remembers him for his kindness to and his concern for others - trying to help them create better results, his attachment to his telephone, his enjoyment of a good family gathering, and his plans to develop his land to help others through the non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable trust, Foundation for Asthma and Immune Research, which he co-founded in 1988. Gifts to the foundation are being accepted in his memory at P. O. Box 12349, Prescott, AZ 86304.
A memorial "Celebration of Life" joint service will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 26, with Prescott Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at Granite Peak Unitarian Universalist Congregation, 882 Sunset Ave., Prescott.
