LICHTENWALTER, William Donovan


The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 01/27/2006 William Donovan Lichtenwalter, 80, went home to be with the Lord and with his son, William Gene Jan. 23, 2006. He was born Feb. 16, 1925 in Hammond, Indiana to William and Mildred Lichtenwalter. At a very young age the family moved to Shelbyville, Ill. where William grew up and attended school. He was very athletic and enjoyed all sports. He was well rounded as an athlete. After school, William joined the Navy during World War II. He was always proud of his service. In November 1947 he met Doris, and they married June 13, 1948. They moved to Arizona in 1953. William and Doris lived in Tucson where they raised their family. He was employed by the University of Arizona. He was a machinist in their machine shop. He produced custom parts for the Physics Department. William was very creative with his hands. He could build anything and was a talented woodworker. In 1985 they moved to Show Low. William loved the outdoors. He was a bow hunter. He also loved to camp and was especially fond of fishing. His family would say that he was a passionate angler. William was an able gunsmith. His love for the outdoors led him to become an Eagle Scout. He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America and served as a Scoutmaster for many years. He was a people person, and the people in his life will miss him very much. William had a strong sense of Community and often volunteered his time in community service. He was very active and involved with his church as well. William and Doris were avid square dancers for many years. William loved birds and he made sure that all the birds in his neighborhood were fed. He even had a bird bath warmer so they could have warm water in the winter. He was one of a kind and will be dearly missed. William is survived by his wife of 57 years, Doris; children, Richard Dean (Kathy), James Michael and Jeffery Charles (Joyce); grandchildren, Angel, Billy, Holly, Jennine, Cameron, Jeffery and Michelle; numerous great grandchildren; his special niece, Becky and her husband Ron; brother & sister, Steve and Ann. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Mildred; his son, William Gene and two brothers and one sister. Memorial services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 27 at the White Mountain Methodist Church. Owens Mortuary of Show Low handled the arrangements.
