Austin Earl Allvin, 80, former owner of Broken Arrow Lodge in Lakeside, died peacefully in his Green Valley, Arizona home Feb. 5, surrounded by his wife and several of his children.
He was born Feb. 24, 1925 in Warren, Illinois.
Mr. Allvin was a veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
He was proudest of his 54-year marriage to Rosemary Allvin and of their nine children. Shortly after graduating from Warren High School in 1943, Mr. Allvin joined the Navy as radio operator on ships in the Atlantic Ocean. For the Korean War, he joined the Air Force. He met Rosemary Leveling in 1950 in Belleville, Illinois, and the two were married July 3, 1951, before moving to St. Johns, Newfoundland as Mr. Allvin reported for duty at Thule Air Force Base in Greenland.
Mr. Allvin worked in government intelligence, research and development, and ultimately editing technical materials. In 1961 the family moved to Tucson, and Mr. and Mrs. Allvin have called Arizona home for most of the past 45 years.
In 1972, the Mr. and Mrs. Allvin moved the family to Lakeside, to operate Broken Arrow Lodge, the family house for which is now the Christmas Tree Restaurant. During that time, seven of their children attended Blue Ridge schools, and Mr. Allvin moonlighted as the accountant for HAC Contracting of Show Low. In 1978, the family moved to Sahuarita, as Mr. Allvin joined Burr-Brown Research Corporation of Tucson, where he worked as technical editor until retiring in 1988.
Mr. and Mrs. Allvin then moved to Lihue, Kauai, where they led an adventuresome life for 11 years before returning to Green Valley. Mr. Allvin's final seven years were lived to the fullest, as he and Mrs. Allvin celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, saw three children marry, welcomed four grandchildren into the world, and traveled the country extensively to visit family.
Mr. Allvin was preceded in death by his parents, Thomas Ray Allvin and Loretta Belle Eicholtz; and a brother, Eldon Ray Allvin, all of Warren, Ill.
He is survived by his wife, Rosemary, of Green Valley; his brother, Oran Allvin, of Warren Ill.; his nine children, Victoria Tidwell of Everett, Wash.; Steve Allvin of Marana; Sr. Lynn Allvin, of of Mesa; Diane Allvin Beach of Mount Lake Terrace, Wash.; Barbara Vierling of Santa Paula, Calif.; Judy Allvin and Karen Allvin of Shoreline, Wash.; Col. Dave Allvin, USAF, of Dumfries, Va.; and Paul Allvin, of Vail; as well as three sons-in-law, three daughters-in-law, and nine grandchildren, ages 26 years to three months.
A private family celebration of his extraordinary life has been held. The entire Allvin family wish to acknowledge Odyssey Hospice.
