The White Mountain Independent, Show Low, Arizona ~ 03/14/2006 Gladys Marie Walker, 88, died March 6, 2006 at Apache Junction Health Center. She was born Dec. 30, 1917 in Llano, Texas and moved to Superior when she was 5. She lived at the Jeffrey Ranch until she was 16. She married Barney Walker and they had a son named Melvin. She worked for many years as a clerk for Alma Jennings. In 1967 she became Post Mistress for the Superior Post Office. In 1985 she retired from the Post Office. Gladys enjoyed sleeping late. She loved being in her yard working with her hands. In the summer she liked to get away from it all and spend time at her other home in Wagon Wheel Lakeside area. Gladys was involved in the community and she was in the Chamber of Commerce and the Women's Auxiliary, she also started the Superior Historical Society. She wrote many articles for the Arizona Republic, she was the editor for the Superior Sun and she wrote stories for the Pinal Ways, and with all of this she was still able to write two books. In 2003 she published Copper County Folklore. In 2005 she published First 20 Years of Superior Police. She was very honored to be Grand Marshall of Apache Leap Days. She will be missed by family and friends who loved her and the community that benefited from her tired less service. We will always love you Aunt Gladys. Gladys is survived by her three brothers, "Jiggs" Jeffrey of Superior, Bill Jeffrey of Hewitt Station and Albert Jeffrey of Queen Valley; 11 nieces, nine nephews and numerous nieces and nephews. And to welcome her into heaven will be her husband, Barney Walker, son Melvin Walker and grandson, Tony Walker; her father, Walter Mann Jeffrey; mother, Lillie Jeffrey; brother, Homer Jeffrey and sister, Ruby Bolinger. Private services were held at Owens Mortuary in Show Low. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 18 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel in Superior for family and friends.
