Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, Arizona Published Tuesday, June 22, 2010 June 6, 1937 – June 20, 2010 Jon C. Von Colln, 73, passed away at his home in Lake Havasu City Sunday from leukemia and other medical complications, with his wife and son, John, by his side. He was born June 6, 1937, in W. Cape May, N.J., to John and Margaret (Moser) Von Colln. While serving in the U.S. Army (M.P.S.), he was on the Honor Guard in New York City in 1957 for the visit of young Queen Elizabeth (he said she was cute) and was an escort in Europe for the European candidate for the 2nd “Unknown Soldier,” who later joined the Asian candidate and the one of the two was secretly chosen for Arlington Cemetery. John joined the local Cape May Police Department upon leaving the Army and later was a guard at the New Jersey State Penitentiary in Yardville, N.J. In 1963, he and his wife, Sandra, and the then two children moved to Ontario, Calif., where he served on the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department until he was injured in 1975. In 1965, he was awarded “Outstanding Deputy: of the Year.” He graduated from Chaffey College and Pepperdine University. In 2002, they retired to Lake Havasu City full time. John’s hobby was always boating and in 1988, he and Sandra were named ‘Cruisers of the Year” by Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club, of Channel Islands Harbor, Calif. They lived on their powerboat for four years. In 1976, he became a private investigator and polygraphist and worked in seven counties in California and three states and became very well known for his thoroughness and investigative skills. John was a member of International Police Association, California Fingerprint Association and “Star” (hosting German police personnel). John and Sandra celebrated their 53rd anniversary last September and in September 2006, they renewed their wedding vows in a lovely church in Germany. They were high school sweethearts. John is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Sandra (Nee Scott) Von Colln, of Lake Havasu City; children, Deborah Ann Whitely (Kevin); Kurt John Von Colln and John Von Colln (Corrine); grandchildren, Jonathan Nicholas Whiteley and Nicholas Sterling Von Colln; brother, Eldon “Butch” R. Von Colln (Mary); brother-in-law, William C. Scott (Sandy) and many cousins, nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held in California at a later date.
