STURTEVANT, Allan Lyman (Rev.)


Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, Arizona Published Monday, August 10, 2009 The Reverend Allan Lyman Sturtevant was born Dec. 13, 1935, in Youngstown, Ohio. He passed away July 25, 2009, in Chandler, after a 14-month battle with leukemia. Allan resided in Lake Havasu City prior to his passing. He is survived by his wife, Sue Sturtevant; his son, Micah Sturtevant, of Tucson; and his daughters, Nancy Sturtevant-Steffe, of St. Charles, Mo., and Wendy Sturtevant-Gawlik, of Chicago. He is also survived by sister and brother-in-law, Ellen and John Kendig, of Lake Havasu City; sister-in-law, Patricia Sturtevant, of Florence, Ala.; four grandchildren; three nephews; and two nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, John Van Sturtevant; mother, Beatrice Lyman Sturtevant; and brother, Richard Sturtevant. Allan grew up in Pittsburgh, Pa. After graduating from Shadyside Academy School, Allan attended Carnegie Mellon University, formerly known as Carnegie Tech. He left Carnegie Tech to join the U.S. Army Signal Corps, where he served overseas in Fountainbleu, France. Following his tour of duty, Allan returned to Pennsylvania to attend Waynesburge College, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business. Allan later earned his MBA at University of California-Berkeley, and his Masters of Theology from San Francisco Theological Seminary. Pastor Sturtevant dedicated his life to the ministry, serving in Presbyterian churches from California to Illinois, with a career spanning more than 40 years. Shortly after graduating from San Francisco Theological Seminary, Allan took an associate pastor position at Lakeside Presbyterian Church in San Francisco. It was at Lakeside where Allan met his bride, a Sunday school teacher named Sue Rohrbaugh. Following his marriage to Sue, Allan went on to serve as pastor of Community United Presbyterian Church of Pittsburg, Calif., First Presbyterian Church of Des Moines, Iowa, and First Presbyterian Church of Jacksonville, Ill. He served as interim pastor, then Minister of Member Care at the Community Presbyterian Church of Lake Havasu City. He spent several years as chaplain for Hospice of Havasu. In addition to his career in the ministry, Allan took great pride in serving the city of Lake Havasu as City Councilman. Through the city, he worked on the CLEAN committee, dedicated to addressing methamphetamine issues in Havasu. Allan enjoyed teaching accounting and interpersonal communications classes at College of Marin and Lake Havasu Community College. He was also an active member of Lake Havasu’s Republican Men’s Club. He was fond of visiting his children, corresponding with friends, working on his computer, reading historical novels and studying health-related issues. A memorial service will be held at the Community Presbyterian Church in Lake Havasu City Aug. 15 at 11 a.m.
