Violet P. Bast Born October 17, 1915 in Livingston, IL; died August 16, 2007 in Chandler, AZ. Preceded in death by her husband, Ned F. Bast and daughter, Rita Anne Bast. Survived by two daughters, Janet A. Ewald (Chandler, AZ) and Loretta A. Mogan (Rochester, MN) and five sons, Charles A. Bast [Mary] (San Manuel, AZ), Thomas A. Bast [Dorothy] (Camp Verde, AZ), Gary A. Bast [Deborah] (Chandler, AZ), John F. Bast [Deborah] (St. Louis, MO) and Paul R. Bast [Mary] (O'Fallon, MO). There survive 20 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, in whom she took much delight and pleasure. She has one brother, James Vanzo and one sister, Mildred Baird, and two sisters-in-law, Dolores Azbill (TX) and Betty Bast (IL), who are still living. During their working lives Ned and Vi lived in and around Creve Coeur, MO.
Family roots went deep in the mid-west. In retirement since about 1975, Violet and Ned lived for many years in Tucson. Violet was always a part of parish activities wherever she lived. In later years Violet moved to Camp Verde to be close to her son Tom and his wife Dorothy who provided on-site assistance as needed in her declining years. Ultimately she moved to Chandler, where she resided at the time of her death with her daughter, Janet, whom the family recognizes as a very special caregiver. While in Tucson Violet was very active as a volunteer with St. Elizabeth of Hungary Out-Patient Clinic. She was also a member of the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulcher, a distinctive honorary church organization that financially supports the Christian presence in the Holy Land. As she aged, she took up painting, both oil and watercolor, and was quite good at this new hobby. She loved her family deeply and enjoyed winning against every one of them in games of cards and/or dominoes. She was always a vibrant, giving, gregarious matriarch of the family and involved with her community. All those who loved and knew her will miss her.
Funeral services will be held at St. Augustine Cathedral, 192 S. Stone, Tucson, at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 21st preceded by a Christian Vigil/viewing at 6:30 p.m. Burial will be at Holy Hope Cemetery, Oracle and Prince Roads, at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 22nd.
