Edith "Edie" Batcheller Hazlehurst died June 21, 2010.
Mrs. Hazlehurst was born in 1924 in Forest Hills, N.Y., one of four children born to George and Ella Batcheller. She grew up in Miami, receiving her nursing degree from Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City. This is where she met her husband of 57 years, George Hazlehurst.
Together, they had a rich and full life, raising eight children. They lived in many places, including Japan, before settling in Arizona 53 years ago. In 1970, they moved to in Flagstaff, where George had a medical practice.
Mrs. Hazlehurst was the matriarch of a huge, extended family and will be greatly missed by all. Those who knew her describe her as warm and heartfelt.
She was an avid reader and intellectually curious, with a sharp mind and quick wit. She was a strong advocate of education and many of her children and grandchildren became teachers. She also was a staunch supporter of the High Country Raptor Program at the Arboretum, in which her one of her granddaughters is involved.
She was a deeply spiritual, open-minded individual, with an interest in all religions.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, in 2004, and daughter Elizabeth. Edith is survived by her children, Ginnie Moore (Bill), Katie Collins (Jim), Mary Hazlehurst (Steve Gustafson), Belle Hazlehurst (Ken Knight), Monty Hazlehurst (Allyson), Larry Hazlehurst (Amy Johnson) and Victoria Moyers (Karl); 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and brother David Batcheller of Florida.
There will be a private family celebration of her life. Condolences can be sent to the family at www.norvelowensmortuary.com
