Saul
Saul, the son of Romanian Jewish immigrants, graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School and the City College of New York. Decorated veteran of WWII, earning Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation. Married for life to Mildred Lobel in 1942; they had 3 sons - Phil (b. 1946), Larry (b. 1949) and Bruce (b. 1954). Enlisted in US Army in 1942, served as medic in North Africa and Italy, attaining rank of sergeant. After the war, earned masters degree from Columbia Teachers College. Taught at public elementary schools in Harlem, rose through the ranks to become a public school principal in Staten Island, The Bronx, and Manhattan. Wife Mildred earned her degree and worked as a schoolteacher in the NY City school system. For many years in summertime he worked as head counselor at summer camps in the Catskill mountains, providing his family with summer vacations out of the hot city. Saul retired from the schools at 55, worked another ten years for Carvel ice cream makers.
The Goldbergs lived in the Bronx for many years. In later years, Mildred and Saul became world travelers. After sons were grown, Saul & Mildred moved first to Bronxville in Westchester County, then Cranbury, New Jersey and finally to Green Valley, Arizona, where Saul passed away from cancer, 4 days before his 83rd birthday. He was a quiet and modest man, devoted to his family, much appreciated and respected by all who knew him. He is remembered with love by his sons.
