RUDINE, Carl J.


Obit from Grand Rapids, MI newspaper - Carl J. Rudine, aged 94, of Green Valley, AZ and formerly of Michigan passed away January 29, 2002. He was preceded in death by wifes, Doris A and Dorothy H. He was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI and graduated from the Universary of Michigan with a B.A. in architecture. He was an architect for three years with the U.S. National Park Services and for three years for the Michigan Conservation Department. During World War II, he served four years at sea with the U.S. Navy. While an officer aboard the destroyer Flaherty, he took part in the 1944 capture of the German U-505, which provided codes that enabled the Allies to sink 300 U-boats during the war. He was a commanding officer of an LST 821 and group commander of ten LSTs in the Okinawa invasion. He was commanding officer for 15 years for the Military Sea Transportation Service at the Grand Rapids Naval Reserve Station. He retired as a USNR Commander. He was associated for 25 years with the architectual firm of Roger Allen & Associates in Grand Rapids. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects, Michigan Society of Architects, retired Officers Association, and Reserved Officers Association. He retired in 1969 to Benzie County, MI where he was chairman of the County Palnning Commission for 12 years. His second retirement was in 1981 to Green Valley, AZ where he was a dorector of his homeowner's association, a president of the Reserve Officers Association and a member of the Kiwanis Club. Graveside services will be held on February 26 at 2 p.m. at Green Valley Cemetery.
