Today's News-Herald, Lake Havasu City, Arizona Published Thursday, April 9, 2009 Hazel Lucile Berthiaume, 87, of Lake Havasu City, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2009. She was born Nov. 8, 1921, in Ashby, Minn., to the late Ole and Caroline Balgaard. She was the only surviving child of 14. Hazel married the late Raymond Berthiaume in 1942, and they lived together in many different places when Raymond was transferred by the military. Hazel and Raymond relocated to Canyon Lake, Calif., in 1991. Hazel relocated to Lake Havasu City in 2004 to be close to her son and daughter-in-law. Hazel had a wonderful and varied life as the wife of a military officer, motel co-manager, motel owner and gas station owner. Hazel spent four years in Germany in the early ’50s, Hazel and Raymond immigrated to Canada in the late ’60s and spent 10 years productively working in Canada. Hazel was the consummate gardener, she could make anything grow. Wherever she lived, green sprouts seemed to spring up everywhere. She enjoyed playing golf and cooking. Hazel was active in the military officers association activities. Hazel is survived by one child, Landis (Marsha) Berthiaume, of Lake Havasu City; one grandchild and four great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made out to your local hospice organization. Hazel’s wishes included cremation and spreading her ashes on the lake.
